I’ve wanted to build sod couches since the early 1990’s, when they seemed the ideal solution to the coincidental problems of a desire for an outdoor sofa, an overabundance of brush and access to some worn but structurally adequate rugs. A sod couch seemed the ideal thing for relaxing at the end of the day, gazing off at the beautiful Big Sur coast.

Looking at my most recent mound of softwood prunings, I think the west garden could use a sod couch or two. I’ll gather my branches, fabric, soil and seed and get them started this fall. Heck, maybe I’ll build a few! Any space in the garden with an unobstructed, long view is fair game.
