The west slope has been a theoretical and practical problem since we moved in. First, because of the huge, never-pruned or thinned 40-year cypress in the northwest corner, the slope is dark quite early (around 5pm in summer) and second, due to the 40 year accumulation of ash and a whole bunch of clumping kitty litter.
The plan is to clear the weeds and kitty litter and then plant a bunch of plants that will gradually heal the soil, and remove the schmutz. The plants we’ll be starting the cleanup with are nasturtium and canna. Eventually we’ll add some sunflowers, but want to stay away from anything too tempting for the kids, right now.
